Search Engines - A Brief Overview of the relationships between search engines

The following list contains the major English search engines on the market today and explains the interlinking of results and inter-dependency.

Google - http://www.google.com

Google is the dominant search Engine today. It is a crawler based engine and provides natural search results based on the patented Google PageRank algorithm. It also provides Search Engine results to AOL Search and Netscape. Google's tabs provide relevant results for Images / Groups / Directory / and News.

AlltheWeb - http://www.alltheweb.com

Sometimes also known as Fast (AlltheWeb is owned by Fast) , AlltheWeb is an  excellent crawler based search engine that provides excellent relevancy in its search results.

Yahoo - http://www.yahoo.com

Yahoo is the oldest human edited directory established in 1994. Currently Google provides Yahoo's natural search engine results. Directory results are from its own once highly revered directory, which has lost some of its relevancy over the last few years.

MSN - http://www.msn.com

MSN is making large strides in the search engine arena. Currently it uses feed from the LookSmart pay per click engine, but uses its own algorithm to further refine the search results. It also receives pay per inclusion results from Inktomi.

AOL Search - http://search.aol.com

AOL should never be ignored simply because of its massive user base that seldom steps outside of the AOL environment. Currently Google provides the search engine results for AOL Search.

Ask Jeeves - http://www.askjeeves.com

Teoma, owned by Ask Jeeves, provides the crawler based search results. Ask Jeeves also displays paid results from Google AdWords.

  HotBot - http://www.hotbot.com

HotBot provides easy access to the web's four major crawler-based search engines: AllTheWeb / FAST /  Google / Inktomi /  Teoma. The new all-in-one approach at HotBot was introduced in December 2002. In the past it used to receive listings from Inktomi but later switched to Direct Hit which adversely affected its results and caused a significant exodus of users from the popular search engine

  Lycos - http://www.lycos.com

One of the oldest search engines on the web, still very popular and now uses crawler-based results provided by AllTheWeb.

Teoma - http://www.teoma.com

Owned by Ask Jeeves, Teoma is a crawler-based search engine. It has loyal followers due to its relevancy although recent developments have affected the relevancy of its search results.

Search Providers - Search Engines that feed other Search Engines

These search engines provide listings to other search engines.

Inktomi - http://www.inktomi.com

One of the older search engines, and  the major player in the pay per inclusion search engine arena. Inktomi provides its search engine listings to other major search engines including HotBot MSN LookSmart and Overture

Looksmart - http://www.looksmart.com

LookSmart is the major supplier of search engine results to MSN and therefore must not be ignored.

Open Directory - http://dmoz.org

Pay Per Click Search Engines - Pay Per Inclusion Search Engines

"Pay per Click" and "Pay per Inclusion" Search Engines have become increasingly more important in the search engine landscape. Buy bidding on key search phrases, you can ensure that your companies listing appears at the top of the search engine results. Pay per Inclusion is essentially a recurring annual fee to ensure that your website is listed in the search engine directory.

Overture (GoTo) - http://www.overture.com

Go is the former portal site that grew out of the old Infoseek search engine. Owned by Disney, the company abandoned further development of Go in March 2001. Search is still available at Go; however, the results are simply paid listings provided by Overture (see above). The original Infoseek service launched in early 1995 and was transformed into Go in January 1999.
